Outdoors

There are a lot of fallen trees, stones that are excellent to train balancing on. Begin easy and call the dog with candy. Make it more difficult by letting the dog to sit and further on lay done on the stone or the fallen tree.

Hide candy in the forest. I usually throw candy up on a hill, up on trees, stones. Thereby they practice in searching and balancing.

Tessi and Tyra searching for candy on the ground and up on a tree.
I hide myself a lot while we are walking. I have done this since Tessi was a puppy and now the same with Tyra. That way they have to be attention where I am.

Track and search

Track and search is very stimulating for a dog. One third of a dog's brain works with interpreting different scents. When a dog finds a track, signals are sent between the mucous membrane and the brain. This is really brain training for a dog. The dogs scent is so amazing that it's a shame not to try tracking. I train a lot of tracking with Tyra, I hope to train her as a rescue dog. I train with Norske Redningshunder (Norwegian rescue dogs). The site is also in English if anybody is interested. I recommend strongly this kind of training. You don't have to train the dog to be a rescue dog, but same kind of training is extremely stimulating for the dog. I love to watch Tyra while she is working. She is just made for search and track.

Agility

If you have possibility and space it's very easy to build a small agility training ground in your own garden. Tyra tried out weave poles and the tunnel. The weave poles was easily made by some branches from the garden. The tunnel was a big box. Easy and fun for the dogs. Tessi remembered exactly what to do though it was at least 6 years ago we trained agility.
